Christmas Day of Hope Outreach: A Movement of Kindness in Sierra Leone

At Impact Sierra Leone (ISL), we believe in the power of community, compassion, and celebration—even in the face of hardship. One of our most cherished annual initiatives, the Christmas Day of Hope, brings light, joy, and hope to Foindu Village in rural Sierra Leone, a community deeply impacted by poverty.

The Journey to Hope

In 2020, ISL began working in Foindu, launching our Seeds of Life program to help improve living conditions in this rural farming village. Despite its picturesque surroundings, Foindu struggles with extreme poverty, lacking basic necessities like clean water, electricity, and adequate healthcare.

Dr. Adama Kalokoh, ISL’s CEO, witnessed firsthand the daily challenges faced by the villagers and realized that many had never experienced the joy of a holiday celebration.

Inspired by this, ISL decided to organize a Christmas celebration that would not only bring food and entertainment, but also empower the community. The result was the Christmas Day of Hope—a day of festivities, recognition, and shared memories that has become a beloved tradition in Foindu.

A Day of Celebration and Empowerment

Held annually, the Christmas Day of Hope brings together students, parents, teachers, farmers, healthcare workers, and local leaders. For many, the event is a rare opportunity to enjoy a festive meal, experience cultural performances, and receive much-needed supplies. The day features:

  • A delicious Christmas meal and drinks

  • Music and entertainment

  • Youth and women’s cultural performances

  • A youth spelling bee

  • A cooking competition for the best African soup

  • Special recognition for farmers

  • Hygiene and school supply giveaways

This event not only provides nourishment, but also fosters a sense of unity and pride in the community. ISL works closely with Foindu’s residents throughout the year to ensure the event is a success, with everyone contributing to its planning and execution.

Personal Stories of Hope

The impact of the Christmas Day of Hope is best captured through the voices of those who benefit from it. Local youth like Alimamy Sankoh describe the event as the highlight of the year, while children like Sulaiman Conteh and Kadiatu Kamara express their joy and gratitude for the celebration. Local leaders, including Country Director Joseph Sesay, emphasize the pride the event brings to the entire community. ISL Volunteers including Project Manager Evans Godwill and Community Food Coordinator Blessing Faith Mammah share their excitement to serve and inspire the people with their talents.
